Fuel Delivery

Fuel Delivery

AAA will deliver a limited supply of fuel, if available, to the member to enable the member to reach the nearest station where fuel is available.

Basic members pay for the fuel. Plus members do not.

This service is not to give member's free gas. It is to give members who have run out of gas enough gas to drive to the nearest gas station.

If a Plus member is 1 block away from a gas station, the member is only entitled to enough gas to drive a few blocks. The member is not entitled to 2 free gallons of gas.

If fuel is not available the member will be towed to the nearest station where fuel is available.

Note: in some areas it may be illegal to transport fuel. In such cases the member will be towed to the nearest station where fuel is available.

The following represents Federal and New York City regulations regarding fuel delivery. The rules apply to gasoline and diesel fuel:

Federal:

New York State has adopted federal guidelines for the transportation of hazardous materials.

- No more than 8 gallons of gasoline in a single container, maximum of 440 lbs. total. (More than 1 container may be transported)

- For gasoline - the container must be made of metal or plastic and conform to the requirements of the subchapter (must be approved by a testing facility, such as "UL" and stamped accordingly). A container with an OSHA stamp alone does not qualify.

- The container must be properly secured onto the vehicle.

- The driver must have knowledge of the material - that it is flammable.

New York City

New York City is more stringent in their fuel delivery guidelines.

- A tow vehicle may transport up to 1 gallon of gasoline.

- Anyone transporting more than 1 gallon of a flammable substance must obtain a permit from the NYC Fire Department.

Individual municipalities, such as cities or townships, must meet at least these minimums, but can enforce stricter regulations.
